My grandmother recently asked me if I'd like to have a large shoebox full of old buttons that she had collected over the years. Of course, I enthusiastically said YES! And what a treasure it was! The variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and textures were enough to keep me and my daughter occupied for hours, carefully examining all the beautiful little baubles.
They just don't make buttons like this today - some are truly works of art! I displayed the loose buttons in a large milkglass pedestal bowl in my studio, which shows off the colorful array and makes them easily accessible for crafting projects. Not only do I plan to use them on scrapbooking projects, but I can also see many options for jewelry, clothing embellishment, and home decor projects.
Some of the buttons are still on their original cards and these vintage pieces are so interesting (10¢ for a card of buttons? What a deal!) I've stored these in a tin bucket and I love to imagine the original sewing projects they might have been purchased for.
So the next time you're at a flea market or antique store, keep your eyes open for buttons! They are often cheap and you can find varieties that aren't easily available today. And as your collection of buttons grows, why not show them off? A colorful assortment in a glass jar brightens any bookshelf or tabletop!
